The current development trends of automotive diesel engines are governed primarily by requirements for clean exhaust, improved fuel economy, and driveability. The historical pre-eminence given to pure power/torque generation has hence taken a backseat though power still is a very positive motivator for the customer. The stringent emission norms and customer requirements on driving comfort and performance have made the role of fuel injection equipment much more important

The Delphi Multec® Light Duty Diesel Common Rail System is a robust, modular fuel injection system. This highly popular system offers automotive manufacturers the best value light duty diesel fuel injection system in the industry. The system features balanced valve, extremely fast actuating servo-solenoid injectors, which deliver precise metering and performance similar to competitive servo-piezo technologies, but at lower cost. Delphi's DFP6 high pressure fuel pump, which may be included in the system, offers best-in-class volumetric efficiency, well above 90 percent at very high pump speed. The compact size of the DFP6 pump and injectors allows packaging flexibility with reduced weight. And, the system also includes Delphi's patented Individual Injection Characterization (I3C) control strategy, which helps provide optimal control of multiple injections over the life of the engine to help maintain low noise and reduced emissions.

The Delphi Multec® Medium Duty Diesel Common Rail (MDCR) System is an advanced diesel fuel injection system with variants capable of 2,000 bar system pressure. It uses a fast-acting solenoid injector design to optimize fuel rate, spray shape and accuracy, which provides small injection quantities in a compact injector package. Using closed-loop control strategies, it delivers precise fuel quantities over the life of the engine for cost-effective, robust emissions and acoustics performance.

Common rail direct fuel injection is a direct fuel injection system for petrol and diesel engines. On diesel engines, it features a high-pressure (over 1,000 bar or 100 MPa or 15,000 psi) fuel rail feeding individual solenoid valves, as opposed to a low-pressure fuel pump feeding unit injectors (or pump nozzles). Third-generation common rail diesels now feature piezoelectric injectors for increased precision, with fuel pressures up to 3,000 bar (300 MPa; 44,000 psi).[not in citation given]In petrol engines, it is used in Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine technology

Common rail is a modular, Electronically Controlled Diesel Fuel Injection System. The particular design of common rail, with its flexible division of injection into several injections (pre, main and post injections), allows the engine and the injection system to be matched to each other in the best possible way.Common Rail Fuel Injection System is characterized by its High Pressure Accumulator (or Rail) from which it derives its name. A high pressure pump develops the required pressure for injection and delivers it to the High Pressure Accumulator (Rail). The Injectors which are controlled electronically by the Electronics Control Unit draw the high pressure fuel from the Rail as and when commanded by the Electronic Control Unit.

Initially introduced for in-direct injection (IDI) driven passenger cars, distributor pumps have been successfully applicated & are running world over on heavy duty direct injection (DI) commercial vehicles and off-highway applications as well. Distributor pumps are known for their compactness and versatility to take on several add-on devices, to cater to all the engine requirements.Introduction of electronics in engine management has become a necessity to meet the stringent emission norms. The launch of VP36/ VP37 EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) systems signifies this step towards improved closed loop controls. These systems are similar to mechanical distributor pumps but with electronic controls for fuel metering and injection timing.Mechanical and EDC pumps have been applicated to meet Euro III & Tier III emission legislations.Mechanical pumps are being manufactured since 1986, at the Bangalore plant. Production of pumps has been shifted to the state-of-the-art plant at Jaipur in the year 2000, manufacturing both mechanical & EDC cummulating to around 5,00,000 pumps annually.
